Mama Mia!
After a long, long (did I mention long?) day of traveling, we finally made it to Rome. Exciting? Absolutely. Exhausting? Oh, you bet. But mostly? I was starving.
Now, as anyone who eats gluten-free knows, arriving in a new city—especially one known for its pasta and pizza—comes with a little anxiety. Would I be able to find something safe to eat? Would I spend the first night in Italy just snacking on the emergency granola bars in my bag?
Too tired to venture out on a full-fledged food hunt, I turned to my trusty FindMeGlutenFree app. Scrolling through the options nearby, I came across Mama Eat. The reviews were solid, it wasn’t too far, and at that point, I would have settled for anything that wasn’t airplane food.
So, off we went! And when I say we almost walked right by it, I mean we literally stopped, checked Google Maps, backtracked a few steps, and only then realized that the tiny, unassuming hole-in-the-wall spot in front of us was actually our destination. But wow, what a hidden gem it turned out to be.
As soon as we stepped inside, I asked the million-dollar question: “Do you have gluten-free options?” The worker smiled and told me that everything—yes, everything—on the menu was gluten-free. PIZZA. PASTA. Even gluten-free beer. If I hadn’t already been tired, I might have shed a tear of joy right then and there.
Naturally, my eyes were about five times bigger than my stomach. I ordered a Tricolore pizza, which came topped with fresh mozzarella, arugula, and cherry tomatoes, and because I have absolutely no self-control when it comes to Nutella, I also got a Nutella dessert. The pizza? Perfection. Thin, crispy, flavorful—exactly what I had been dreaming of. And the Nutella dessert? Let’s just say I was not prepared for that level of indulgence. Worth every bite.
The staff was friendly and knowledgeable, and it was such a relief to eat without constantly second-guessing every bite. In fact, I loved it so much that we ended up going back two more times before our trip was over.
So, if you’re in Rome and gluten-free, take it from me: Mama Eat is a must-visit. Just don’t be surprised if you end up there more than once. 😉
