Blondes & Buns

When I think “gluten-free friendly,” my brain doesn’t exactly scream Irish pub. But tucked in central north Calgary, right in Mission, is Joyce on Fourth — a cozy, wood-panelled pub that’s here to challenge your gluten-y assumptions in the best way possible.

With its classic pub feel, walls lined with TVs playing every sport imaginable, and that comforting hum of good company and cold pints, Joyce on Fourth feels like the kind of place where gluten-free diners might be out of luck. But plot twist: they’ve got some solid options that made this gluten-sensitive gal very happy.

First up, they offer gluten-free bread substitutes for all their handhelds — burgers, sandwiches, you name it. I went with the turkey club, which was a little on the dry side (turkey being turkey), but the bread held up like a champ — no crumbling or sad slices here.

For a side, I opted for the coleslaw, and it was chef’s kiss creamy and flavorful, the perfect contrast to the drier turkey.

And here’s where they really won me over: they serve Glutenberg Blonde Ale! A gluten-free beer that actually tastes like, well, beer. Light, crisp, and the ideal pairing for game day food and people-watching.

Is it a dedicated gluten-free spot? Nope. But Joyce on Fourth is doing a better job than many places that claim to be gluten-free friendly. And if you’re looking for a laid-back spot to catch a game, grab a pint, and not stress about gluten sneaking onto your plate — this might just be your new go-to.

Would I Go Back? Absolutely — especially when I want that classic pub feel without compromising on my gut health.

Sláinte, Calgary friends! 🍻
